To Smith McGovern, compassion is never passive. It grows from hope that a community that makes space for everyone is possible and from a commitment to equity that makes sure no one is left behind. That belief guides their work as Chair of the qathet Pride Society, where they see their role as being “a keeper of queer traditions while engaging in radical acts for social change.”
With a background in the therapeutic field, Smith knows how much it matters for people to feel seen and supported. They put that into practice by creating events across our region that bring people together, and by joining boards, volunteering, and having open conversations with people who see the world differently.
Smith joined the Lift board in 2026, drawn to the range of services that meet people where they are and make a direct impact on our local community. For them, it’s where hope and equity become compassion in action.
Away from the boardroom, Smith can be found at the gym lifting weights, or sharing laughs with their adult daughter, who happens to be their favourite person to spend time with.
