Volunteer with us!

We couldn’t do what we do without volunteers! 

Our volunteers provide essential support that helps our programs make a positive impact in individuals’ lives and the community.

Volunteer positions

Our literacy volunteers are the core of our program and their time and energy make a direct impact in our community. Tutors work one-on-one or with small groups with adult learners, supporting people as they develop essential literacy skills that open doors to daily life, work, and community involvement.

Responsibilities: 
– Support learners with reading, writing, media literacy, and systems navigation
– Help learners work toward personal goals 

Time commitment:
– Flexible; up to 2 hours per week 

No teaching experience is required, and we provide training, ongoing support, materials and coaching opportunities.  

Tax Clinic Volunteers support our Community Tax Program, preparing and filing income tax returns on behalf of people who have modest incomes with simple tax solutions.

Responsibilities:
– Pick up tax return packages from staff once a week and drop off completed returns
– Prepare basic tax returns following CRA guidelines, on your personal computer (software and office supplies provided)
– Maintain privacy and confidentiality

Time Commitment:
– Seasonal – typically February – April. Time commitment is flexible.

Training is provided by the Canada Revenue Agency.

As an Immigrant Services tutor, you’ll support learners in their language journey, whether that is basic conversation practice or helping them to improve their language skills for work, study or daily tasks. 

Responsibilities:
Support English language practice (conversation, reading, writing)
– Help learners work toward personal goals  

Time commitment: 
– Flexible; up to 2 hours per week 

We provide training, one-to-one matching, class times, and material.  

 

Community House volunteers help keep our space welcoming and organizedand help build strongesense of community. 

Responsibilities:
Sort, organize and assist in distributing donated items
– Help with meal preparation, serving and clean-up
– Support staff with daily operations as needed 

Please note, kitchen activities require an up to date Food Safe certificate. 

Time commitment: 
– Flexible weekday shifts between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm 

 

Share your skills and creativity by hosting a workshop, recreational activity, or group programming! 

Key responsibilities: 
– Plan and facilitate activities such as art, yoga, games, storytelling, or skill-sharing workshops for one or more of our Community House programs (Community Resource Centre, Family Programs, Immigrant Services, and Literacy)
– Collaborate with staff to align activities with community needs  

Time commitment: 
Flexible; one-time, short-term, or ongoing opportunities available 

 

Help us get the good word out! As an advocacy volunteer, you’ll support our work by writing short op-eds, blog posts and informational articles to share accurate information about the community issues our programs address, and challenge stigma about poverty, homelessness, harm reduction and other social justice issues.

Key responsibilities:
– 
Write accessible, accurate and informational pieces for publication and online distribution
– Research topics and collaborate with staff on messaging
– Revise drafts based on feedback and publication needs
