Year End Message from our ED - LIFT - Community Services

Year End Message from our ED

Looking back on the year that is coming to a close, I am inspired to reflect on the challenges and successes Lift and the larger community of qathet have faced. From the closure of our beloved The Nook to the expansion of our drug checking, peer education and complex care housing teams – it has been a busy year for Lift. Within the broader community, ongoing and divisive dialogues about acts of reconciliation, responses to the unhoused and the long-standing toxic drug crisis have brought increasing tensions, as well as new opportunities for learning and growth.

For many of us, December is the month to spend time with loved ones, look back at our recent successes, and excitedly dream of what is to come in the next year.  While we take this opportunity, I encourage us all to think of those who endure isolation, hopelessness and loss, and to reflect on what actions, no matter how small, might serve as a balm to those who suffer within our community. Recognizing my own privilege, I am reflecting, and invite you to do the same, on how care is defined by action and yet can be used as a sentiment or phrase that supports inaction. Over the last year, I have witnessed great acts of kindness and I look forward to the collective voice that supports inclusion and compassion to gain in volume this upcoming year.

Thank you for joining us in this work, and I wish you all a peaceful and joyous holiday season!
