Injectable opioid agonist therapy (iOAT) is an evidence-based treatment option for people who use opioids, by offering safer alternatives to the toxic drug supply that has and continues to harm so many.
In addition to oral opioid agonist therapy, iOAT offers a prescription pharmaceutical medication for people who have a history of injection drug use and a diagnosis of opioid use disorder. These medications are dispensed by registered nurses in a clinical setting, with supervised consumption.
Having access to a regulated substance that is safely dosed to each person, and support and supervision in consumption alleviates some of the everyday stressors that people who use substances face. This opens up time and energy to focus on other health and wellness goals, and improves overall wellbeing for people who use substances.
The iOAT Clinic was established in 2021. We are proud to be the first remote coastal community in the province to be offering this evidence-based substance use treatment.
