Extreme Weather Shelter Operationalized

Our recently approved Extreme Weather Response (EWR) shelter opened to provide overnight shelter for 8 consecutive nights during last month’s cold snap.

We’re so grateful to have been able to provide this space for people to stay warm and safe in the sub-zero temperatures we experienced. It makes a huge difference to folks who would otherwise be outside in this cold and snow! We supported 9 unique individuals during the 8-night period the shelter was open.

The EWR shelter operates from 8:30 pm – 7:30 am on an as needed basis during periods of extreme weather like the sub-zero temperatures experienced in qathet in recent weeks. The 20-bed shelter, based out of the Community Resource Centre, was recently approved for operations by the City of Powell River to run until April 15th. The EWR shelter program is a provincial program funded by BC Housing.

With our 20-bed emergency shelter (located next to the Community Resource Centre) at capacity every night, we recognize there’s a need for additional overnight shelter especially on nights when the weather threatens the health and safety of people without a roof over their head.

We live and work on the homelands and territories of the Tla’amin People. We honour the land, the Tla’amin People, and their treaty and continually seek to strengthen our relationship and responsibilities to them as guests in the territory.
